I can see why some would do it, but ....

Places are available on a first come first serve basis, but Marie Curie has urged that riders get fit for the challenge and are able to ride at 18mph or above for six to seven hours

That bit rules me out

A little bit confused by this, does it mean that normal cyclists are going to be stopped from riding the roads in front of the tour? When I was in France we where allowed to ride pretty much at any time even after the roads had been closed to motorised traffic apart from being pulled in by the gendarmes when the caravan was about to pass, At some points they where even allowing cyclist to ride between the caravan and the tour itself.

In fact looking on the website it is very worrying,

"As a member of Marie Curie's Power Peloton, you’ll be part of a select group of just 25 riders on the stage only hours ahead of Froome, Cavendish, Contador and all the other pros"

So they will be closing the roads even earlier and anyone cycling in either direction will be buggered!! All so some events organisor can cream £0.5 million from a charity.

The riders on the event will either already be pro or semi pro cyclists, or over-egoed business mamils on status symbol bikes.

IMO this is a massive mistake by Tour Yorkshire and if Marie C wanted to raise money they would have been better of with skimpily clad nurses wandering around with buckets behind the Caravan!!

{rant off}

The roads concerned are expected to be closed to all traffic for a minimum of eight hours, with most anticipated to be closed from early morning.
If "all traffic" means cyclists as well then I think it is a complete disgrace and will ensure the TdeF doesn't return, foreign riders coming to spectate will just luv it. I now fully expect the event to turn into a bit of a farce, and as this "charideeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" ride is first come first served with no cycling credentials required I expect to see 25 stroppy wannabees complaining that they have been pulled to one side to let the tour through when they have paid their money and not been able to keep the pace.

Are they totally pixxed?

A group of Kickbikers rode the entire TDF course a day in front of the tour last year. Apart from their own personal expenses, they paid nothing.

I know this is a charity ride but that is insane.

Calderdale council are planning on closing the roads in use to all traffic no more than two hours before the ride is TDF is due on them.
With one the only way over to Huddersfield, being the road to J24 of the M62. Anything happens on the motorway, people want off.

It's not April 1st yet.

I think it's a wind up. Not a chance they will be able to stop people cycling/walking around on the day.

Even if they wanted to it is going to be impossible to close the entire route off to bikes
