Neat programme on BBC4 last night.

Robert Penn, who cycled round the world a few years ago, travels all over Europe
and the US collecting bits for his dream bike.

Visits Brooks, Cinelli, Campagnola and Marin County.

Best bit is bombing down a mountain with the now old guys who invented mountain biking.

It's repeated tonight ( Thursday) at 1.20 am and Saturday at 1.05am.

And it's on iPlayer.

Yes I caught this, really enjoyed it.

I was really surprised at the end product. I was initially excited by it, then as he started to collect each component bit by bit, they all just seemed totally incongruous and I thought he might be creating a bit of a monster, but boy it turned out pretty damn nice.

No idea how it rides though of course, not that I think he cared.

Was also a good program about Tommy Simpson on afterwards which is no doubt on iplayer too.

Re the Robert Penn Programme:
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
Didn't like the colours of his bike though.
For the money I would have gone at least for silver plated!

Reynolds 953 doesn't even have to be painted it's stainless steel, a laquer coat is all it really needs to keep the marks off.

Mind I'm not sure I agree with his claim that the Raleigh Chopper
was "unrideable" and that it "put a generation of kids off cycling".

From what I remember it was the coolest bike on the planet, and probably
got a lot of kids into cycling.

Not when you had to ride one in the 80s handed down from your bigger brother when all your mates had Raleigh Burner BMXs with mag wheels.
