Hi

My first post having joined the forum.
I'm 52 and decided to get into cycling mainly to get fit I'm 19.5 stone and really unfit.
I decided to get a road bike a Bianchi via Nirone7 using the cycle to work scheme which was delivered this week. I don't drink or smoke but as I stated unfit.
I'm thinking of joining a local cycle club as I have two to choose from in the Warrington area but I'm nervous of making myself look a fool plus I wouldn't want to hold anybody back on a ride with me lagging at the back. But the idea of cycling with a group developing a friendship with other cyclists and riding in a group appeals to me.
I'm asking for some views please. I don't want to be a nuisance and a burden to other cyclists.
Thanks

Don't know much about goup riding as I only ever ride alone.
However, just wanted to compliment you on your choice of bike! Enjoy! :okay:

Hello from another born again cyclist..
I came back to cycling at 59 (cycle to work bike)..days to go until I'm 62:blush:
I'm still the same weight as you (19 really)
I've 7,000 miles(I use GPS) under my belt and I love every minute.
My first ride was a 7.5 mile one and had to be almost lifted:ohmy:off the bike.

I never joined a club, I just do my own thing.
I reach a junction then decide which way to go.
I never wanted to be a back end charlie either.

I do pick destinations and know my route but I tend just to improvise as I go and get there eventually, a couple of 70 odd milers in..
I do other hobbies en route like geocaching, a bit of radio work etc.

Go out, get fitter and ENJOY:okay:
and don't worry about others,
only yourself and YOUR enjoyment:okay:

Thanks, which club are in?

Long way from you. Lincoln Wheelers as I said most clubs have members of varying abilities, go for it. Whilst you are at it start eating better and drinking less, your future life depends on it.

Get out there... Do your own thing first I would suggest and then join a club for social maybe over 40's cycling if there is one near you.

To inspire you I am 47 and a club rider for the past 5 years. It was daunting riding with a club but made me stronger and they are very friendly. I was seriously ill the last three years (Lymphoma and two bone marrow transplants) recovered and then started riding with the club again. It was really hard and the first few rides I slowed everyone down but they would wait for me at the next junction. I am stronger and fitter now and not always last but really enjoying it.

You can do it.:bicycle:

Welcome! I turned 50 this year and returned to cycling a few years back. I have never wanted to join a club as I'm more a leisure cyclist. I found a good way to get fitter was to look for a forthcoming local charity ride and use that as a target to work towards. Your local to me ( I'm in Liverpool) and began with Ride of the Roses for Clatterbridge Cancer Charity. My father in law and myself began with 50 miles first and have done it every year since increasing the distance.
Just found this added some structure and gave a target to work towards when getting to the end of the road hurt!
Happy riding...but cut your credit cards up before the bug bites!
