I was looking on a French site called "Le bon coin" and spotted a Jacques Anquetil bike from 1970, only 3 gears though for 65 euros. It says it is all in good working order and only 3 gears. All I really want to know : is that a fair price for it?

Better price than you'd get in the UK. Silly money over here !

Interesting. Very deep-drop front brake, with even lower adjustment possible. Looks a well made frame, possibly earlier than the 1970 claimed (3 speed block???). Maybe made for larger wheels than those currently fitted, although they look to be of similar age?
Seller seems unaccountably proud of having refitted the brake cables, with the levers almost inaccessible and the rear outer left so long you could nearly trip over it when getting on! That said, it seems a reasonable price, even if the delivery charge (presumably France only) is unbelievably low compared to here in the UK.
On a side note, a scan through Le Bon Coins Anquetil velos, it's amazing what a range of bikes carry his name, even including a clunky folder!

How much does it cost to Oldham?
Like. And a great price.

I noticed there are quite a few retro bikes for sale ranging from 30 to 100 euros. Gitanes, Anquetil, Fignon etc.... I suppose the market for old bikes is not regarded as so highly as it is over here.
Sadly, it is no good to me as I don't take my car there anymore. I just fly and hire one when I get there.

It’s a pet irritation of mine that people call something retro when it isn’t. If a bike was made in the 1970s and looks like a bike made in the 1970s. Then it is simply a bike made in the 70s. It isn’t retro which is where something made in one era is made to imitate something of a different era. So if you made a bike in 2021 and designed it to look like something from 1970. That’s be retro.

Nice looking bike:okay:

LeBonCoin is a happy hunting ground for myself and @woodbutchmaster^_^ . Like all sites it has a number of chancers and the odd faudster, (that is a story for another day) but there is a lot of good stuff on it, obviously French, but also Italian, some Spanish, German, depending on the border region. And of course if you are looking for French components, or French threaded stuff, (like Campagnolo pedals) it has a wide choice.

It can, however, be very frustrating: there is a habit of not removing old adds, sellers tend to over use key words (so the number of adds for actual Merciers, for example, is far below the initial number shown in the search), sellers can be very arbitrary as to accepting bids, the secure purchase option that an increasing number of sellers use only works with a French credit card and the postage can be complicated if you are outside France (as I am).

The postage costs referred to in the ads are always for mainland France so you have to get an individual quote and that is if the seller is interested in packing the item, and the bigger it is the more reluctant they are. Plus, since the start of the year posting from the EU to the UK has become more difficult for one off individual sellers, filling in the Customs form requires, exact weight, correct customs code, and a range of other details that make many people think it is not worth the bother.
