I currently have resin pads on my Hybrid and etched into the discs it says resin only. I am about to change the pads and am wondering if i can change and what , if any the benefits could be ?
Also what is the actual difference between the two ?

Thanks

Never heard of resin only rotors. Sintered pads don't provide as much braking power or modulation and they run hotter. They do however last longer.

It would be relatively easy to swap the Shimano rotors over to a set that are capable of taking sintered pads. However, there is the possability that it's not the rotors that wont take sintered pads, but the brakes themselves.

If you use disc brakes VERY aggresively then you can generate a LARGE amount of heat. You'll often hear MTBs taking about how their brakes began to fade on a fast descent or they became pumped up and locked on after being used in anger. Sintered pads produce more heat than resin pads so it is easier to get heat related issues using a sintered pad.

Sintered pads tend to out last resin pads 3-5 times over. So for a MTBer riding in girtty conditions the sacrifice of a small amount of braking power in return for a brake pad that will last months instead of just 1-2 rides is a worthwhile trade off. However, if you're riding mostly road / light off-road with a hybrid then even resin pads will last months, so there probably isn't the need to fit a harder wearing pad.

Thanks again Redbike. That information is very useful , as a relative new comer to cycling i tend to ask many questions and as always these forums and friendly people like yourself always bring up the answers.

Thank again
