So, I was just coming up to my house after a little cyle this evening when a mini bus run by the local authority pulled straight out infront of me without even acknowledging that I existed - he can't have checked the road properly at all because I was wearing bright yellow and was quite obvious. I had to brake, and if I hadn't in time then he would have knocked me off my bike. He then pulled up about a hundred yards up the road to let two passengers exit - still oblivious to me as far as I could tell.

Now, I stopped just outside my house and waited until he'd pulled away so that I could write down his reg number. But I'm not sure if I want to report it when the driver will obviously know it was me - he must have seen me stopping (having a quick drink) and then turn into my house after he'd driven past.

I know it's nothing huge but it just worries me a little, as the local schools are doing their cycling with the children at the moment and there are a lot of little ones out of their bikes and cycling around at this time. If he didn't notice me in a long sleeve bright yellow cycling top then would he notice a 10 year old in a little high vis vest?

What type of response have others encountered when they report things?

If the driver really missed seeing you I doubt whether he would have spotted you stopping outside your house. Best course of action would have been to have cycled up to his window and told him he nearly knocked you off, your next action would depend on his reaction. Either accept his apology or report him to his employer or, if you think he committed a traffic offence, ring the non-emergency number for your local Constabulary (which you have programmed into your 'phone, don't you?) and ask them to take a report of dangerous driving. His vehicle number will then be logged on the Police National Computer and the next time a member of the public reports him or the vehicle is seen by a patrol car equipped with ANPR he will get stopped for a little chat and a "producer".

I wouldn't hesitate.... think of those little children.

Even if you don't feel like involving the Police, give the transport manager a ring at your local authority and ask them to have a word with their driver. It may be that they already have complaints recorded against him and are just waiting for enough to take action.

I did the same thing with a driver of a double deck bus last year (not cycle related though) and his local transport manager was very interested in the actions of one of her drivers. She pulled the onboard CCTV when he got back to the depot and rang me back with the result of her chat with him

There was enough to have had the Police deal with the incident, but I was happy for him to get a warning from his boss rather than a prosecution.

I reported dangerous driving by a bus driver last month. A couple of weeks later a child was run over a bit further down the same road. To be fair, I don't know the full details. The bus driver might not have been speeding (as they're prone to so on that road) and the child may have run out from behind a parked car.

I've not had a reply from the bus company yet but am glad that I contacted them.

My friend had a near miss with a bus a few times on the same stretch of road....the company took it very seriously, which is good
