Hi all

Today I finally got fed up with the careless and dangerous driving that I experience every day on the roads in Powys. Once again if it hadn't been for my quick thinking I would have been knocked down by a careless driver. After taking the advice from a member of Powys Road safety Unit (every county will have one of these) I contacted the police on the 101 non-emergency number.

(check here to see if your area has it too: http://www.direct.go...viour/DG_185338)
I rang the number and got straight through to an operator who took all of my details and then pass me on to a local police officer, who took me through the different steps that we could take.
To cut a long story short I am very happy and service I received today!

The bit of info that I would like to share with you is what the police officer informed me of. The police can track drive down and then potentially prosecute if you're able to give the colour and make of the vehicle as well as the last three digits on the number plate.

Hopefully this could help someone someday!

Cheers,

Tom

The police don't prosecute anyone, so that won't happen

This system has operated for some years in many counties. Assuming the reg, colour and make correspond the report will be put against that reg and the next time the vehicle is "seen" by a patrol car (ha ha) equipped with ANPR the driver will be stopped for a chat and a producer. More than three reports earns them a home visit; we have dealt with several habitual speeders in our street in this way.

I was able to give a description of the car but no number plate as I wasn't able to remember the whole set of digits.

But as the officer told me, 'You only need to get the least three, so that we can successfully (most of the time) track down the driver.'
So in the future that will be the first thing that I look at!

I was also told that I should always report incidents like this one as it help the Police to collect data on the area so that they know where to put extra traffic cops on the road and what to look out for.

Perhaps slightly off topic, but you have to wonder why the plate has been designed in a manner such that the three most important letters are the last ones to be read and therefore least likely to have been seen.
I smell a conspiracy.

i think that most people know that the first two letters identify the region the car was registered, the second two numbers the cars year and only the last three letters identify the car.

Answer is, read the last three letters first

Today I finally got fed up with the careless and dangerous driving that I experience every day on the roads in Powys.

I've also found some of the roads in Powys to be scary for cycling. Newtown And Welshpool was a nerve-wracking experience. Welshpool to Oswestry ain't much better. My better half (a keen cyclist) used to live in Berriew and she rarely used the A483; we are both grateful that we now live close to the much quieter and safer roads - west of Oswestry.

If you like hills, ever tried cycling from Llangynog to Bala ?
