Live to Ride
Every morning I cycle the same route to work containing a particular pedestrian crossing used extensively by crossing school children. Every morning some absolute arse runs the red and with all the kids crossing it is chaos waiting to happen.
So this morning after 2 drivers, one from each direction, ran the red light I contacted the police who agreed to set up a monitor and speak to local schools to tell their children to take care. Well done to the local constabulary!
These people are nightmares waiting to happen and I for one feel that they have no place on the roads

outside my flat there is a set of lights and I think I'm the only person that stops at them and it's a main school route too... around from me there is a bus station in the drivers are mental, the number of times I have walked passed and there is an ambulance there with a tent up infront of a bus... and I am sure they it's not a camp they have got going. Anyway I went to my MSP about it and some other stuff in the area (Any one knows the joying point to NCR 7 at beith street will know what I mean), she did effe all so have given up moaning about it.

So a problem has been identified, ie, RLJ's. The police response? Warn children to take care crossing the road. Sounds about par for the course.

Keep nagging the b*stards.... but with a single issue in each communication. Keep a record of each phone call/email/letter When they do f*ck all after a few... send the file to the local paper. RLJs will (sadly) only make the news on a slow news day....Incompetent lazy politicians, on the other hand, now that's usually worth a headline.

Sorry Chilly,
Do you work for the press? The OP said the local constabualry had agreed to MONITOR the situation and WARN local School Children. Nothing like taking a small segment off a report to twist things!

Kids, at the best of times, will not be looking for traffic, even less likely to be looking for RLJers. To warn them that there is a problem with people jumping the red lights and inform them they still need to make sure that it is safe to cross before doing so and not just rely on the lights for thier safety is good common sense policing!

I taught my kids never to trust the lights at Pelican crossings for exactly the reason that people might not stop.

Has anyone noticed that people don't stop at Zebra crossings anymore?

Q. What does a red light mean?

A. It means that the red light is working.

Ditto for green.

In this case I think the police chose the right actions - monitoring (which means they may spot persistent offenders) and warning the local school children of the danger of not taking the lights as an indication that it's safe to cross.

No, I hadn't. They do in York. Where are you?

In France they have changed the driving test to weight it in favour of drivers who treat other road users with consideration. Round here they are pretty good anyway but I reckon they've got a long way to go in the cities.

Well I've noticed it as an urban phenomenon rather than a city one, people just seem less willing to stop. As for France, I wonder if they had Parisien drivers in mind when they made that change.

Yes. I see it all the time near me.
As a driver, I always stop. Even if someone is just loitering near the crossing, i'll slow down in anticipation.

As a ped, however, i'll just cross in front of traffic. I know it's a bit mental and I have had a near miss once. A woman screeched to a halt about an inch from me.
I slammed my fists down onto her bonnet and shouted at her through the windscreen. It was very satisfying, and she looked petrified. I like to think that she might take more care in future.
It's a matter of principle for me. What's the point of waiting at a zebra crossing? You can wait without a zebra crossing!
