I am in the process of doing up an old Pug as knock about racer/commute while I save some pennies up for some thing better, The bike is pretty good condition apart from the front forks, the Quill Stem in lodged in and will not budge no mater what all so there is a slight bulge where the flanged nut was so looks like its been over tightened at some point.

Only problem I have replacing the forks is finding a match as the steering length in 150mm and the thread is 35mm, question is can I replace the forks which have a longer steering length and longer thread ?

You can always cut off the excess part of the steerer if it is there are enough threads on it.

Try unscrewing the quill bolt by at least 1/4" and hit it down with a hammer to take the expander out of the bottom of the stem. That might release it. Otherwise, turn bike upside down and fill with diesel from the bottom and leave it for a few days, then try again. It's best to put in an old wheel you don't care about, wedge it into something so it can't move and stand astride the frame and twist and pull on the bars.

If brute force and oil wont free it, I think you might have to sacrifice the stem. If you are replacing the forks anyway, this is straight forward. Just cut through it above the lock nut and that will allow it out. If you want to save the forks, use something to drive the expander out of it and then try and collapse it internally with an old screwdriver and hammer.

I will have to replace the forks and Stem, both are shagged, the bulge in the fork steerer means there is a weak spot in it and I dont want to risk cycling with it also I have tried heating it up to try remove it but in all ,just best to replace both for safety reasons.
