Get a q/r hollow axle and a q/r skewer - you'll need to check as there are different sizes - some are 10mm some are 9.5 mm - you need the one to correspond with your existing cones and lock nuts - so best go to your LBS. Remove old axle and replace with hollow one using your original cones, spacers etc - just ditch any that come with the new axle as they likely won't fit your hub. The new q/r axle will not be as long as the threaded one of course . It needs to be just long enough to sit in the dropouts so the q/r skewer is tightened it should not protrude. If it is a little too long then you can cut it carefully to right length.

when removing rear axle do I need to remove the cassette

I don't think so - if memory server me right, you will need to undo the locknut on the non-drive side - the one on the other is inaccessible due to the freehub/cassette.

the axle needs to be the same length and the race surface on the cones must be the compatible with your hub - this deoends on the diamter of the bearings which are most likely to be the same; ideally yuou want the thread on the new axle to be the same as the old one so you can transfer cone/locknut - you can reuse the spacers.

you may even be able to re-use the cones - check they can be fittred onto the new axles.

Finally do not think that a hollow axle will be weaker than the sloid one - it wont be as the hollow axle will be made from a stronger steel - I have never broken a hollow axle but broke at least 1 solid one,

if you are swapping a solid axle for a q/r axle they are NOT the same length - a solid axle requires an amount of axle to protrude beyond the drop out for the wheel nuts to fit on. A q/r axle must not protrude beyond the dropouts or you won't be able to close up the q/r skewer properly! Also you take any cones that come with the new axle off as they will likea s not NOT be compatible with your existng hub and just refit your old ones - this is why it is important to get the correct size and thread of q/r axle.
