Hi to all just joined and i would like to kick off with a subject i know will cause some disscussion among people of a certain age so here goes

I was wondering if any one else on here has replaced recreational drugs with mountain bikes, let me explain -
until recently I was a bit of a lad and then decided one day after a life threatening illness to get back on a bike after 20 years of walking, ( I was an original BMX bandit in the 80's) instantly found the adrenalin rush to be much greater than the rush i was getting from my illegal highs, indeed the faster i could go into traffic the more intense the feeling gets, (I think this should be free on the nhs) any one else use their bike in this manner or is it just me?
further to this i am now and have been drug free member of society for the last 6 years 30 days twenty one hours six minutes and forty two seconds, and i don't miss it one bit.

Not sure if I fall within that certain age you mention, but seeking an adrenaline rush by going "faster into traffic" would be way too much excitement for me, in fact, it sounds downright mad.
Welcome to the forum by the way, I hope you survive to post for a while yet.

don't get me wrong i'm not heading into traffic intentionally just when you find yourself out of control with the speed and the traffic is close its very addictive, it seems that adrenalin is much stronger as you get older, and thanks for your welcome.

toymotor, i'm new to the forum but mad about MTB if you want to get your highs without annoying motorist/bikers
get out onto single rack or DH riding or even night riding like me. If you can power up a few hills in the dark (with some sort of lighting no candles)
then go as fast as you can down through the trees and over roots or 20"x20' logs through mud briers and sting nettles in rain or snow.
good luck to you mate, if I can do it at 66 you can.

its the feeling you get from the closeness to the traffic that gives me the buzz, trails aren't my thing I leave the forest to the animals give me tarmac any day.

yeah that video hits it right on the head although racing bikes aren't that agile i find a nimble bike gets in and out far quicker and handles a lot better
as for annoying motorist its better than destroying the country side in my opinion.

so I managed to get three good responses before the abuse and aggression nice good to talk.

I started mountain biking with a group of drug users many years ago. I would watch the trail while they smoked up, never touched it myself.
I ran into one of my old "cycling" friends a few years ago very scary, no money, no teeth, but he has got a criminal record.

Welcome to cyclechat and good luck staying clean.

Wade into a forum of (mostly ) road using, law abiding and considerate cyclists with a comment like and expect to be treated like a troll
As as to destroying the countryside? It's there to be used, enjoyed, managed and conserved - most MTB's will be law abiding and considerate, using bridalways and singletracks. Just a fraction of a percent will be d*cks, not unlike some traffic dodging adrenaline junkies....

Play nice now kids

Here for rides.
Do I use my bikes to get a rush? You bet.
Do I get a rush riding in traffic in town? You bet.
Do I get a rush riding down flights of stairs on my MTB? You bet.
Do I get a rush riding my MTB down mountains? You bet.
Does it beat the illegal highs I've tried. You bet (but I've led a sheltered life.)
etc.,
etc..

Toy Motor....Firstly well done on getting your highs from adrenaline, instead of narcotics. If your riding your bike then I'm with you, everyone has a different tollerances of what is and isn't acceptable so ignore the ones who have a go and keep riding.....
