Hi all. I have aquired an older bike that I plan to convert into my commuter ride. I have a few basic (silly?) questions on how to get there. I want to keep the down-tube shifter, but the rear derailleur, which some googling suggests is a Huret Eco, is looking a bit tired. So which new mechs will work with friction shifters? Would a Shimano RDTY18 fit the bill? Also, the rear stays are noticeably closer together than they are on my modern bike. Which freewheels could replace the current 5 speed unit? Is the Shimano Tourney going to fit?
I'll almost certainly have more questions to come, but for now all advice gratefully received.

I put a shimano tourney rear mech on an old steel road bike and it worked fine with friction shifters. I put an 8 speed cassette on iirc the highest gear was fouled by the frame so I set the limit to the 2nd highest. The rear stays and front stays as it were steel were splayed relatively easily to fit the wheels. The front fork also needed a bit of persuasion. The bike I did this to had 27x1.1/4 wheels originally so the 700c wheels needed quite a long drop caliper for the brakes. The original set were fine but if I had to replace would have used long drops.

Sounds like the bike is quite old.. Any new rear derailleur will work with your shifters. The six speed freewheel should fit although the rear stays may need resetting though (pulling apart). Might just be able fit a 6 without doing this though, someone on here will be able to advise from experience. I am also guessing it has 27" wheels so your tyre choice will be restricted. Can you post a pic of the bike?

If the bike is old with a 5 speed freewheel then it is likely that the frame has a 120mm rear hub (you can check by measuring the distance between the rear dropouts when the wheel is off). If so you can't just put that 6 speed freewheel on, because all modern 6 speed freewheels are around 5mm wider than a 5 speed one. To use a 6 speed freewheel on a 5 speed hub you would need to add spacers, you should redish the wheel, and you would need to spread the frame (if it is steel) for the now 126mm hub to go in. Unless you desperately want the 6th sprocket, you are better off just pick a Shimano freewheel remover compatible 5 speed freewheel, which you can get from sjs and ebay etc.

No I'm not desperate for a 6 speed, I just wasn't having any luck googling a modern 5 speed option. I'm pretty sure I don't want to spread the stays. It's a VERY old frame (about 60 years old), so I don't want to abuse it, just make good use of it.

60 yrs old? Maybe it is a valuable classic?

Check it out here: http://www.classicrendezvous.com/

i have a 1948 Hercules Olympic (well only the frame is original) i got it second hand when i was 14.
recently (5 years ago) bought an old falcon racer (womens) and stripped for parts. to rebuild it.
only thing i am mad about is that i took the badge off to paint the frame, put it away safe, and haven't seen it since. and as i have moved house since i think it must be lost forever.
