As technology is always, so we are 'advised' improving, what is the wisdom on how often, if at all, one should replace a bash hat to ensure you have the safest type going - ?

If you inclined to wear a helmet then you may wish, also, to follow the manufacturers advice on frequency of replacement (e.g Giro say three years). I doubt very much that helmet technology moves that quickly.

If you wish to wear a helmet, I would suggest you favour comfort on your head over any other consideration and wear it until you find one sufficiently more comfortable as to be worth the outlay on replacement.

I still wear mine that saved a nasty head injury for me a couple of years ago, it has a bit of a bash in it but is mostly intact. Without it I would like had a big hole in my head and a cracked skull so it probably didn't save my life but likely did stop some hurt. Will get a new one in the not too distant future.

This is a little bit like saying that I tore my parachute last time, but I will continue using it.... I may replace it at some point

If you are going to wear a helmet at least wear one that is not already compromised

I fell off some years back and hit my head. My skull didn't crack due to my lucky Y fronts, the beige ones with the brown trim.

You may as well attribute the lack of an injury to the tooth fairy as to a cycle helmet as we know them currently.

You probably fell off whilst adjusting said Y-fronts as were so uncomfortable under your bib shorts!

I know manufacturers recommend 2 or 3 years, but I'm happy to go 5 years if there is no damage to it. (and if I remember)

If it takes a hit however, replace it straight away.

Oh dear,

Along with a new helmet, you also need to factor in a full suit of armour to protect you from the can of worms you have just opened!

P.S my Bell advises renewal every three years, but seeing as it's at least five years old already.....................
