Replacing front wheel when you have disc breaks

Hi all,

I have the revolution country explorer. And I did the most stupid thing ever yesterday. I went on a nice bike ride, but took the bike in the car. After finishing the bike ride, i loaded the bike back into the car, got all my gear off it and drove home. When I came to take the bike back out of the car, I realised I had left the front wheel behind!! arghhhh! (i had to take the front wheel for it to fit in)

So i whizzed back (about 25 min drive) and bloody typically it had gone  F**kin Pikey B*stards!
Its not the first time ive done that. Previously I left the bar bag behind too once doing the same thing. luckily the bar bag was empty, but that too had gone

So I'm on the hunt for a new wheel. Now I could ask Edinburgh Cycles to ship me one, but as I live in Spain its going to be timely process so im wondering if I can get one from a local Decathlon or something.

Now the bike has disc breaks. The question is, when you buy a wheel, does the disc cylinder bit come with the wheel? Or is that seperate? are there different sizes of these cylinders? If if its seperate do i need to ensure the wheel is for a disc break system? I guess i just need to make sure i get the right wheel.

Now, can someone tell me how the sizes work? My back wheel has no markings on it, but the tyre says: 28x1 1/4 x 1 3/4

Obviously I want to make sure the wheels match up already. I know 28 is the size of the wheel in inches. But im not sure what the 1/4 x 1 3/4 is.. is that the width somehow? If someone can confirm exactly what wheel size i should be looking for, that'd be great.

Cheers for your help as always guys... and remember Learn from My Mistake... Do a full walk around the car before driving off when youre loading a bike into it

It's BRAKES not breaks.

Are you sure the wheel size is 28"? It should be 26", check again. If it is, you've no problem; any 26" front wheel with a disc should fit as long as the disc is the same diameter. Losing the front wheel is less of a disaster than losing the rear where you would have all kinds of things to worry about.

That's right, a tyre marked "A x B x C" means approximate (outer) diameter, height and width.

A tyre marked "A x B" means approximate (outer) diameter and width.

Rim width to tyre width is not an exact science but something like a range (rim to tyre width) of 1.5 to 2.0 will be fine.

See the CTC or Sheldon Brown for more finer details.

OK, I've just Googled your bike and it's quite rare; it has 700 wheels and disc brakes. I doubt if you'll find that in Spain and TBH I doubt if anybody will be able to find a use for your wheel. Best contact the retailer who sold it to you to be sure of getting the right wheel and disc.

As advised above.

You need to buy:
1) 700c disc compatible wheel that can take 32mm tyres.
2) a 160mm disc rotor

Also, make sure it says 6 bolt* in the wheel and rotor description.

* The other option in centre lock which may be incopmatible with your system

Does it matter that much? So long as its a 700c wheel, the disc fits the hub (6-bolt or centre lock) it should be good to go. I've got 2 wheels for 1 of my bikes, a 6 bolt disc one and a dynohub with centre lock
