I bought a second hand Hewitt bike and have ridden it a couple of tours down to Spain, and use it a lot for shopping and so on.

The gears started slipping, and on a recent gear change going hard uphill, the chain got bent. I've replaced it with a

KMC X9-93 9 SpeedChain Grey 9 Speed, 116 Links

Gears are still slipping, so I guess it's time to change the cassette and chainset. The teeth on the cassette look pretty worn anyway. The chainset doesn't look too bad, but I'm no expert!

The bike came with
Chainset : Shimano Deore M590 170mm 22/32/44
Cassette : Shimano Deore SLX 9sp 11-34t

The cassette seems to be out of stock everywhere I've looked. Has it been superseded? Can someone recommend a good alternative please? Most of my riding is local short range stuff, but I'm planning to do more long tours, so I'd appreciate reliability and if there's cost savings to be made, I'd sacrifice weight since I'm usually carrying cargo/luggage anyway.

I haven't changed these items myself before (though I do have a cassette removal tool). Is there anything else I'd need to buy before swapping these parts.

Thanks for any suggestions/advice,

John

You'll need a chain whip to hold the cassette against the ratchet while you use your cassette removal tool. As I'm from the Olden Days I can't comment on what tools you'll need to get the chainset off (all mine are square taper)

The gears are slipping because you've put a new chain on a worn cassette. Unlikely to be any thing amiss with the chainset (so leave it be).

As already said: chain whip and a spanner to turn the cassette lockring tool you've already got.

You might find one of these useful if you’re planning to do a bit of maintenance and will cover what you’re going to do. £33 from Decathlon.
