Could I get off just by replacing this sort of chainset, without needing to change the whole drive train, or the cassette? At least for temp?

If you can't change any other component, for temp you need to ensure the replacement is compatible with and delivers a very similar chainline with the existing bottom bracket. Also if the replacement's largest and smallest rings do not have the same number of teeth as the existing, you might end up having to change chain, front or rear mech to match.

I find that chain wear is the usual problem, chain length within reason can be taken up by the tensioner in the rear mech but if the chain is worn too much it'll ride & jump on the new chainwheel teeth. Its not the end of the world but it can be a real pain. Cant quite tell from the angle how much the inner chainwheel teeth have worn, obviously the closer the teeth are to a pointed top rather than a flatish top the less liklihood of an easy ride.

It's not really about the wear...my lower ring got it real bad..

The problem is... I can't allow myself to get a new drive train and new wheels just yet, so I have to cope with whatever I have, and replacing the chainset is my only option for now, till I can get a new drive train.

Crikey, how'd that happen?

The minimum you need is a new inner chainring, which you can just bolt on, a little bit of threadlock or superglue on the bolts adds security when reassembling.

Old chain on a new chainring is less likely to cause problems that a new chain on old outer chainring or cassette, so you may well be OK with just new inner chainring.

Spa cycles (http://www.spacycles.co.uk/) do a wide range of replacement chainrings.

Ah svendo you got there before me with that one, to be fair in the short run the extra wear you'll get from a mix-match is negligable anyway. Spa and st johns street, some of the range on St J's i'd forgotten even existed!
