Hi

Is there a decent guide on how to replace cables? I'm thinking it doesn't sound too tricky, but some tips would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Cables for what exactly?

I had difficulty when swapping the cables on my STi brifters...I guess most levers are different in the way they clasp the 'nipple'. Once I had worked out how to get the inner cable out, replacing was easy.

Cables for gears and brakes. Got a mate who I'm helping refurb an old MTB. The frame and wheels are about the only thing that doesn't need replacing.

You will need a good pair of cutters.

So these combination pliers won't do?

One little tip that I always forget:

If you get cables with pre-lubed outers, check the instructions to see which direction to push the inner through. Get it right and you have a nicely lubed cable; get it wrong and you have a dry cable with a lump of lube on the end.

No. And nooooooooooooo!!

Try them with an old bit of cable you will see they will ruin the inners and mash the outers...

Proper mechs will sneer, but if you are not thinking of turning pro, these do the job @ about 1/10th the ££ of Park or similar:

I am sure they are fine. 4 x the price of the generic ones but if you prefer the reassurance of having the word "Cycle" on the packet, I suppose that's not bad

Cheap cutters really don't work as well as the Park ones, which are well worth having. Expensive but excellent.

+1 to the Park cable cutters. I started off trying to use combination pliers, it really isn't a good idea.

Also check which way the cable is twisted and then insert into the outer in the same way, this will stop it fraying on its way through.

Don't cut the cables until AFTER you have threaded them through the sti's & outers etc. This will stop them fraying as you put them through.
Of course I have never done something like that have I.
