Hi all.

I have just picked up a cheap giant terrago, the frame, forks wheels are all in good condition but the brake and gear cables are pretty bad.

Is it easy to replace them or should i get it done at a LBS?

Also should i get the rear cassette and chain rings replaced?

TIA

Replacing cables is very very easy.

The rest depends on how badly worn they are, and whether you want to buy/beg/steal a couple of simply tools.

Are there any good video guides about, and what are simply tool?

I rear cassette looks a bit worn, so probally best to just replace it anyway.

Cheers

Sorry - simple tools - typo.

I just buy cable inners and outers from LBS. And they work just as well as the £50 garre-tex GTI 2000 sets from robbers inc.

Take bike to shop and ask them to identify tools needed (depends on bike). If you have spanners etc as basics, should only need lock-ring tool and chain breaker for what you are doing. Cable cutter if you are feeling flush - I just use very sharp side cutters which do fine.

Cable cutters are definitely worth it if you're going to maintain your own bikes. Not expensive, and make a MUCH neater job.

Apart from that on a modern bike a set of allen keys will almost certainly do the job.

TBH I never used them - gave them to someone in the end. I don't cut anything till it's all done and dusted. Then I cut the cable with a very good quality paid of sidies I have - goes clean like the cable cutters did - and nip a furrle on the end.

Nothing like watching someone cutting a cable with a pair of pliers or similar though for a total horlix.

Just cut the cable off at the near the adjuster (which looks like a bit has broke off) and shove the rest back through towards the nipple (cable nipple, not yours;)) until you can get hold of the nipple end and pull it with some pliers. Hang on, I think I've drifted of the topic here!
