i've acquired from lbs a brooks b17 with a broken head bolt (numpty over-tightening by the look of it).

i can get a new bolt, but brooks' site warns about installation by qualified personnel etc

i've got an identical saddle already for bolt tension reference, and it doesn't look a difficult job to actually install the bolt.

so, should i just go for it?

Here for rides.
Brompton will tell you some science, provide you with some numbers, and then say "but it is an art sir" But seriously, what have you got to lose.

To quote Sheldon Brown:

Most leather saddles have a tension-adjusting nut located under the nose of the saddle. Fortunately, this nut usually requires a special wrench, so most people leave it alone. In almost every case that I know of where someone has tried to adjust the tension with this nut, the saddle has been ruined. My advice is to leave it alone.

Good luck!

asked brooks and they sent this:

A new Tension Pin should rectify the problem – of course, you need to set the Nut at the right location along the Pin in order to achieve the correct tension and remove the slackness of which you speak at the moment.

For a UK consumer, it would be cheaper to buy this part from a shop within the UK (Bicycle Workshop in London is a good example), rather than through the Brooks website – as this would then be shipped from our Branch in Italy.

Give Tony Colegrave a call 01797 253177. He has repaired one of my Brooks I can not recommend him highly enough.
He knows his stuff and he will save you a lot of hassle.
