Replacement HG73 chain question

The original chain on my 2.5 yr old Trek 6000 MTB is fecked, there is up to a 1mm gap/float between the link tho,Kerr and side plates due to the bad winter of 2010 and poor maintenance from me.

I need to replace it and scoped a new one from CRC at £11.99 (50% off!)
It's to go with the Deore SLX MECH and as shimano doesn't spear to have a compatability chart for this,I just want to be sure as it doesn't specify SLX???

Any advice welcomed ( chain related that is)

Any 9 speed chain will work fine with an SLX mech. ^_^

Having done my first every chain change just a few months ago, choosing the new chain is the easy part so long as the speeds are the same. The KMC brand seems pretty well liked

As a chain wears, the distance between links increases and wears the cassette and chain rings, so theres a chance one or both of them might need changing too. I was (still am) lazy on maintenance too and when I put the new chain on at least 3 of the sprockets in the cassette were unusable because the chain just slipped under the smallest pressure, which left the bike virtually unrideable until i replaced the cassette too.

Thanks Mr Jamie,
I ave tried to check the cassette in-situ and it doesn't appear to have shar-toothed, however, fine inspection once removed and degreased may just catch me out.

I thought the same with mine, but it was the gaps between the teeth that were noticably wider on the more commonly used sprockets, the teeth didnt really look pointy. Im still not sure if my chainrings are a bit dodgy

Mr Jamie, my taking a chance didn't ay off, on removal, the chain was two and a half links stretched and the new chain slips like hell.
£15 and a few days for a new cassette
Was worth a punt

Have you got the tools to replace the cassette?

I think i got a remover tool for about £3 from wiggle and just used the old knackered chain in place of a chain whip. Easy job though, i think i just watched a youtube vid

Any 9 speed chain will do, like a KMC X93 for example, or a sram PC971, PC951 or shimano HG53 etc...
