Hey all,
I have a Trek 7.2Fx, bought in the beginning of November 2009. I am mostly (for now) recreative cycler, sticking to canal paths and tracks, although lately been venturing on longer road rides The last couple of months, I have been hitting a snag of problems, the latest one of them is an extremely loose/wobbly/untrue back-wheel. However this is not the first time I have experienced loose spokes. The first time it was fixed by a friend of mine and all went well till about a couple of months ago, a second wobble made me check in my bike at my LBS (Bicycle Doctor in Manchester), since it was due for a check-up anyway. About two days after said service, one of the spokes broke (However, I am inclined to believe (so far), not related, and they did fit a new spoke when I brought this to their attention, free of charge.
The latest and most serious wobble was on the last stretch of my first 40 miler ride. The last mile was becoming increasingly bad. On checking the spokes, we (me and bike-bud, known around these parts as: Xuk ) found several loose, so very flexible loose, spokes on the rear wheel. We've tried truing the wheel as best as we could with a spoke tool to the point it looked ridable again. The first ride certainly felt without a problem.
A couple of days later, a second ride, about a mile in, the wobble was increasing again to the point the bike became unstable to my feel and unable to ride, so that ride was cut short (feeling pretty gutted, damn I miss riding).; Anyway, this lead me to the actually question(s):
Is there any hope/chance in trying to re-true the wheel and/or bringing the bike to the LBS and see if they can fix it? Or considering how quickly the spokes became loose again .. is the backwheel knackered and am I best of with just replacing the whole wheel. In case of the latter ... what are my options for a decent back wheel and what kind of costs am I looking at?
Thanks.
M.
