I have a weighty indonesian knockabout internet hybrid, which is used for family bike rides & carries the child seat.

It has this horrid weighty stem and aluminium bars which creak like mad.

I'd like to replace the stem & bars but am not sure what measurements to take to make sure the replacements, which I would normally order online, fit the forks. If you could help me with what I need to measure that would be very helpful.

Thanks !

For stem length measure from centre of steerer to centre of bars like this

For everything else AASHTA

You need to ascertain what the diameter of the steerer is - either 1" or 1 1/8".

Then work out the length of stem needed as shown above - this is personal and what position makes you feel comfortable.

Next work out if you need an angled stem to raise the bars.

Finallly the other variable is the diameter of the handlebars which are either standard or oversize.

Thanks - it's a 1 1/8 steerer, the bars are normal sized and I just ordered replacements for both so that'll be a nice little job later this week :- ) !
