I have a claude butler MTB AL7005 alloy series, there is play in the front pivot bearings (steering colum). how does one dismantle this part of the bike? I've got as far as taking the kore stem off the top of the shaft but couldn't see where to go from there. thanks some pictures attached, for any advice.

Dismantling: loosen the (Kore) stem from the steerer tube, Unscrew and remove the top cap and the steerer tube can be slid out (to the extent that the cables will allow).
There are headset bearings top and bottom of the headtube.

It probably doesn't need dismantling, only adjusting. Either look up 'headset adjustment' on Ewe Tube or take it to your local expert. It's very straightforward, but only if you know what you're doing.
yes you were right, thankyou for your advice. I found a video on yt and did the adjustment I never knew it was so easy.
