ok this is probably a silly question im trying to remove the pedal stems on an old bike i dont have a clue what make they are. i do know its a casset bearings in the bottom bracket i took the cover bit off the pedal stems i thort it was funny im used to removing the cover with a screw driver and then remove the nut and on with the remover tool but on this one its a alen key to remove the cover and there is no nut inside in fact with the alen bolt removed on both pedal stems i can see right the way threw. and this is where i get stuck how on earth do i get the stems off of the crank ??????

do you mean the spindle/axle? I've never heard of a pedal stem before!

If you are removing the pedal from the crank, you typically need a 15mm spanner or 8mm allen key.

Ah, after reading it again, you are trying to remove the cranks. Sounds like a Shimano hollowtech II or similar design.

There should be 2 allen key bolts on the left hand crank right? Loosen those and the LH crank will come off if you have removed the cap too. Sometimes there is a little black tab too, flip this up out the way. The RH crank with chainrings will then just pull out the other side.

yea there is something printed on the side that says hollowte???? that must be hollowtech
i have removed the allen bolts from either side i just cant seem to pull the cranks off they are well on there i just wondered if they might be threaded on or something or do i just need to give it a good whack with a mallet ?

thanks stuee

There are two different types of Hollowtech chainsets, Hollowtech and Hollowtech 2 have entirely different bb systems, both have hollow bb spindles, but require different tool/procedure for removal.

The original Hollowtech cranks had octalink bottom brackets, after you have removed the hex bolt/cap the crank/bb interface you can see is like the first pic here, and you need to use the clip on button on a typical square tapered extractor to disengage the crank arm from the bb spindle. You need the button because the octalink spindle is hollow and larger than that of a typical square tapered bb spindle.

The more recent Hollowtech 2 cranks have very distinct looking bb as in the first 2 pics here, which you can follow for removal.
