does anyone know how to remove a damaged freewheel? it spins in both directions and the inner teeth, where the tool inserts to remove the freewheel, seem to be worn on the inside, not giving enough grip to the freewheel tool to release it from the wheel. its a 7 speed. thanks.

Do you have (or at least have access) to a proper engineering bench vice?

If so, unscrew the outer freewheel bearing race - will be a left hand thread so turn clockwise to unscrew. It will probably have two pin holes for a tool but a hammer and punch will work fine.

Remove the outer freewheel body.

Grip the remainder of the freewheel in the vice and unscrew it (normal anti-clockwise direction) using the wheel as a lever.

Easy. Use an old screwdriver or a punch to tap undone the bearing ring that sits at the face of the freewheel and remove the outer of the freewheel, leaving the core of the freewheel still screwed to the wheel. Note that bearings and ratchet springs etc will fall out. Now use a large pair of molegrips or a big adjustable wrench to unscrew the freewheel core from the wheel. Job's a goodun :okay:

EDIT: crosspost with tyred but essentially the same method, a big vice does make it easier.

The red arrows point to the pin holes you need. Just tap it round in a clockwise direction with a hammer and punch and once removed the outer part of the block will pull off and lots of springs, pawls, 1/8" bearings etc will fall to the floor.

I remember many years ago stripping down a 6 speed version of one of these, was careful, collected all the bearings and put them in a tin, then knocked the tin of the bench, it must have taken an hour to pick them up and I didn't find all of them.
As its a 7 speed do you know if its a block or a cassette? I'm sure they used both on 7 speeds.

I think if someone is planning to remove a damaged freewheel, there's fighting chance they can spot the difference between a block and a cassette, don't you think (@dave r )?

People sometimes make mistakes, sometimes people don't realise they did both cassettes and blocks with seven speed, I'm just trying to clarify things. Perhaps I should have worded it better.
