This is probably a really stupid question but here goes.

When removing the chainset which direction does one turn the securing nut? I know that usually Right is tight and Left is loose but with pedals it is different. Also will I need a specialised tool or will a socket set be good enough?

what nut are you referring to?

the chainset is held to the crank with a bolt; these are right handed thread i.e. normal.

the left handed threads that I know of on a bike are the RH bottom bracket cup, the LH pedal and there is one inside the pedals - I think on the LH side.

Sorry I did mean Nut. I now have removed those but the actual chain-set is not moving. Any tricks to getting it removed without knocking he hell out of it with a hammer?

I have now fitted the new Chain Set (and bought a Park Crank Puller).
