I didn't.

When finally the pedal released...............

I smashed my knuckles on the chainring.

I have removed skin and lost blood and dignity.

And it bloody hurts like buggery.

Ewww. gear tooth holes in hands and fingers are no fun. All that oily crud mixed up with the blood... and then you have to get it out.
I managed to do a similar thing whilst cleaning the chain on my motorbike. Nearly fainted when my thumb got dragged into the rear sprocket.
(No I didn't have the engine running - or I'd have lost my arm).

Read the thread topic and thought 'ouch, I know what that's about'. We've all done it or similar. Had a similar incident removing a pump from the rear wheel valve... bit too much force and, smack, into the cassette went my hand. We learn...

there's no need to cover your chainset

  1. position pedal at 3 o'clock drive side or 9 o'clock non-drive side
  2. locate spanner/allen key on pedal
  3. put foot on pedal
  4. firmly press down on the pedal with your foot & pull the spanner/allen key upwards

What a silly thing to do. I mean... who would ever do something like that..

Never done that.

I position the spanner so that it forms a V to the crank. I then squeeze the crank hub and spanner together, one handed like holding pliers, and the pedal loosens.

Mmmmmm. Tried that.

The angle the allen key made with the crank arm made this impossible.
