Do we actually need red rear reflectors on our bikes?
Fitting my pannier rack and rear light to my trusty old MTB my bicycle repair man had to remove the rear reflector.
On the Raleigh Racer I've just bought (more on that later) the rear reflector is missing it's red bit so it's just a black patch.
That will need to be removed but once I've fitted my newly bought very bright Lidls lights to it there won't be a new reflector fitted.
Hopefully I've made this clear enough for people to understand my question.

If you wish to comply with the law, then yes you do need a red rear reflector on your bike.

See here.

But what if theres no where to put it? As is the case on my bikes. With the pannier bags on the MTB you'd never see it and my foot would hit it pedalling anyway.

As for the Racer well that a whole different fettle of kish.:hello:

Also they've now scrapped British Standards (stupidly imo) , I believe, so where does that leave up in terms of the standards we have to keep to. I haven't seen the BSI kite mark on anything new for quite a while now.

There's always somewhere to fit a reflector, with a bit of bodging. Seatpost? Attached to the rear of the rack?

I think if you're using decent lights, the reflector doesn't really need to be well visible, (I mean practically, not legally), just fitted.

Probably a good idea to have one though. You never know when a rear light might fail and you don't realise for a while.

Your foot would hit it? What sort of reflector would you have fitted previously.

I don't think anyone let alone "they" have scrapped BS , but you can use a reflector that meets any EU standard or one that is CE marked ( this is the comply, you can use tape if you just want to reflect) . You have a rear rack so you could mount a reflector there? I'm guesing it might already be drilled for it, if you are really stuck I have a new rack mounted reflector in a box somehwere that I took off a new bike in the Summer ( I replaced it with one of these http://road.cc/content/review/29507-rsp-tourlite-led-rear-light) that you are welcome to ( If I can find it)
