Hi guys, I have built up my own hybrid bike using a Carrera Gryphon frame and I'm happy with the result. I am only using it for back and for to work (about 3.5miles each way) and general rides for fitness, nothing extreme/sports. The cassette I have used is a Shimano HG50 9speed 11-34, but I have been told that this is unacceptable, low budget, and it will only be good for about 1000miles. I was told that SRAM are better quality but there doesn't seem to be much difference in price and I thought that Shimano were a quality brand?? Can anyone help with this and possibly recommend a good quality cassette please? Much appreciated and cheers!!

I'd use the HG50 cassette that you have got. If it wears out them replace it, but is suspect it will last longer than 1000 miles.

Shimano is without a doubt a quality brand and you will most certainly find that their cassettes are up to the task intended,
Im not a fan of SRAM after spending a massive amount of money recently on their premium group set and the quality of the product being such that it has been recalled twice, my first experience of SRAM quality and customer service is nothing less than appaling

I've been using Shimano 11-34 cassettes for years, and they're long-lasting and good quality. They should last more like 6000 miles (at least) if taken care of.

Cheers guys,
@Rafn, thought as much, as are are most shops, will say anything to spend money in their shops rather than get it cheaper on the 'net. I built the bike myself only to take it to the shop for them to say a dozen things are wrong with it and all will need replacing. Rode to work yesterday and the bike was faultless (albeit the seat was too high and lack of mudguards resulted in a wet @rse)!!

When the time comes to change your cassete you may consider SRAM, they are marginally lighter, have a better range for me and seem to last better but whoever told you, your shimano cassette would only last 1000miles is talking garbage. Get more life out of your current cassette first then think about a replacement would be my advice.

The HG50 is a basic cassette but is perfectly fine. The main disadvantage with the HG50 is the weight - they are heavy. However, if you are not a competitive cyclist what difference will that make. I have found that the HG50s do wear out quicker than more expensive M770 cassettes. I typically get about 2500 miles from a HG50 whereas a M770 lasts about 5000 - however, the M770 costs 3x the price.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/181164873274?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649 ive just purchased this and am well impressed, seems alot more rugged than my hg50, changes LOADS smoother and quicker, but heavier than my old hg50 12-25 but obviously its alot larger, so im nto sure how the weight would compare to a shimano of that ratio, but the colour is very nice and shiny too ;)
heavier than a HG50? That's sounds too heavy to me! I don't believe that it would change quicker than a genuine Shimano part on a Shimano drivechain - perhaps your old cassette was just worn and shifting had got worse as a result?

Cassette lifetime will depend on what you do with your chain. Maintain it well and replace it before it gets too worn and your cassette will last for ages....

had a brand new hg50 with my allez as new swapped that after 100 miles to another hg50 with a different ratio and neither have came close to shifting as well as that not even with evans doing the gear adjustments, the chain is always clean and lubed
