Went to the pub with a friend last night and while he was unlocking his bike he showed me his front wheel had a bit of a kink in it, my first thought was that a bit of work with a spoke spanner would sort it out but closer inspection under a streetlamp showed the rim was alarmingly worn and partly failed.

OK, so this bike is a real beater- used to get to the station each morning (about 1.5 miles) and the rider is (1) tall and heavy and unlikely to 'ride like a cat' (2) not the sort of person who would spend £100 plus getting a wheel built (3) not concerned with performance at all.

Can anyone recommend a basic but tough-enough stock 700C wheel as a replacement? Even better if you can get them in Halfords.

Must also make sure he gets some Koolstops or similar at the same time.

I think decathlon do cheap wheels or just be see what local halfords has

Otherwise go the basic shimano route from Merton, wiggle or similar or a Planet X cheapie. Depends if he needs this year

I spent £30 on a Weinmann XR18 rim laced to a Quando hub just over two years ago, and it's just worn out after 12,000 miles, most being in Winter and 200K audaxes. Apart from a mid term change of ball bearings and re-grease and a couple of spoke tension adjustments it's been faultless. I've just spent £30 on it's replacement but this time gone for a Rigida Flyer rim (or Ryde Racer as it's now called) to the same model Quando hub as the rim matches my rear (and Rigida/Ryde and Weinmann are the same company now anyhow) - from WoolyHatShop. :okay:

Or even check eBay. People often remove entry level wheelsets on new bikes to install their own. I got an Alex rim wheelset for my beater, more or less brand new for about £35. Got a 2013 campag zonda front wheel the other week for £18.
