I like Dura Ace 9000s but they are too expensive
Hope Pro3 look okay and at the very top of my budget but reviews aren't that good - loud freehub, soft alloy carrier, snapping springs in freehub, poor seals etc.
Shimano 105s cheap and good quality but sooooooo boring!

If you are worried about soft alloy freehub all you can really do is buy either shimano or an expensive aftermarket one. On that note though, I thought Hope no supplied theirs with a stainless steel freehub.

EDIT: IIRC it's not the soft alloy freehub that is just the problem. It's the fact that shimano has a paintent on the freehub design so everyone else has to use one that is similar but doesn't quite hold it in place as well, hence why you don't get the problem on shimano ones.

not the Pro3 as far as I know, unless that is a very recent development?

I'm not sure why you have the concerns about the Hope hubs, I've never used the road ones, but the mtb ones are fantastic and bomb proof, I currently have three pairs of wheels with them, the oldest are about 6 years old, and apart from one change of bearings in the rear, (which is a real easy job) I've done nothing apart from clean them. The Freehubs are loud, but that's really not a problem, never heard of the springs failing, and with the alloy freehub body, I use the cassettes with the majority of the sprockets mounted on a spider, this spreads the load on the freehub splines and stops the cassette digging into the alloy of the freehub, although I have used one cassette which didn't have a spider, it was okay, just a bit of force needed to remove the casstte once the lock ring was removed, but nothing too tricky. My newest wheels are Hope Pro 2 EVO SP hubs with Stan's No Tubes Flow rims, I just have to spend time admiring them every time I get on my bike, works of art.

Not sure what you expect from a hub when you find the 105 soooooo boring  considering the 9000 and 105 don't look too different. Maybe the label 105 is boring
Ultegra fun enough for you?

yes, have bought the new ultegra 6800 hubs (£100/pair). I have to say that the rear hub bearings aren't as smooth as I was expecting but still okay and probably need to be run-in

If you want bang for buck then Ambrosio Zenith. Don't be fooled by their cheaper price, quality hubs. The freewheel is pretty loud but it grows on you.

Ambrossio Zenith = Novatec 272/171

And not even resold by Ambrosio, it's a British importer name only.

Having said that the Novatec hubs are pretty good, and the A271 F372, are very light, easily serviceable and great value.

A291SB-SL F482SB-SL are the ultralight hubs that I also meant to mention. 288g.
