Recommend me some flat pedals

Currently have the flat / SPD Shimano jobbies on my commuter and the wretched things are driving me mad as they are never the right way round. I only ever wear trainers, I am never going to commute clipless on this bike, so may as well ditch the dual sided pedals and get some flats.

Any recommendations - something not smooth and slippy, but also not something with teeth like a Great White as I do quite often catch my shins on the pedals

Budget is flexible within reason - TIA

Maybe just buy some of the cheapish cage ones. When I was looking the only other thing is the sharp ones, Ive got MG1s which are well recommended and the studs are immensely grippy, maybe to the point of being a midway from flats to spds, theyre set so they dont spin easily so if you hit a bump and leave the pedal you land back on it rather than slipping down. Theyre really great but my shin wounds just from walking with the bike, make me look like im getting really desperate for places to put my next hit of smack :/ http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=44059 About £30 if you shop around. For something slightly less spikey I was thinking of going for this or similar http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=52882

On the spikier end of the scale I like the Superstar Nanos, you can always remove some pins. Otherwise some Wellgo V8 copies or similar, the ones with the moulded pins are non spiky. For road use only you can alos look at the moulded plastic ones, the Brev M get good reviews. Though I would assume the moulded pins wear down.

Depends on the trainers you wear as well, something with a grippy sole means less spiky pininess required.

I have spiky ones on my road bike, the Superstar Nanos, but then I've never really suffered from shin scrapes. Thinking on it the shin stuff is more likely offroad isn't it?

I hate clipless so have been using DMR V8,s for a while. Most decent trainers grip the pedal really well and I have never had any scrapes from the pedals.

If you want really good grip you can always go the whole hog and get some five ten or shimano am41 shoes too. Might try some when the finances are better.

Not when you are as clumsy as me - often do it getting the bike in and out of the house

I reckon these'll look nice on the red Avail  Any experience?

Not that model but I did buy two sets of really lightweight flat pedals for my road and touring bike. Thinking was that I didn't need the beefiness of full offroad pedals. They were exactly what I expected, well made and very light....and very, very small. Now they weren't quite the design linked above, more of a 'mini me' version of a full pinned pedal, but I definitely didn't like the platform that small. With the ones you've linked to I think you still get the width across the foot but they are clearly narrower front to back.

Personally I'll take the heavier pedals and the bigger platform every time.

Thanks Mac

I think I'll order those but if no good, I'll try to get to a bike shop. I'll probably need them to fit the pedals anyhow

I assume all modern pedals fit all modern bikes?

Should do, a lot of the newer ones only need an allen key to fit for older ones I've got a big old pedal spanner that's mighty handy. Just remember that both pedals tighten towards the front of the bike, ie non drive is reverse threaded.
