Recommend me some decent inner tubes, please...

Realised I had a puncture when I went to the bike to go home...inner tube had split near the base of the valve. Fitted a replacement inner tube and that one split near the base, too!

Luckily got a lift back home with a workmate.

I can't remember what brand of inner tubes they were. Possibly a faulty batch? I did check the valve hole in the rim for sharp edges but didn't see anything untoward.

Anyway, can anyone recommend me some decent inner tubes with good strong areas around the valve base.

Cheers.

Unlucky, I've had a similar experience with spesh tubes and don't use them any more my last tubes have been conti and Schwalbe and I've had no problems with either.

Answer (for my scenario, anyway) was that I had a pump whose head fitted directly to the valve...
My pump head fits directly onto the valve too (master blaster pocket rocket! what a name). I was conscious of making sure the valve didn't move around while I inflated the tyre, then all of a sudden the inner tube split on me. Maybe I should get a different pump to be on the safe side.

Surely the locknut on the threaded valve stops it moving about during pumping  or am I missing something?

Sorry I just reread "The pressure of pumping seperated the valve from the tube by a few mm." still not sure though?

What *can* happen (not so in my case, I'm pretty sure) is that as you inflate the tyre, the valve will move outwards...enough to move the locknut away from the rim. As I was pumping up, I regularly tightened the locknut to make sure it was holding the valve in place.

Vittoria Ultralights - been using them for years - never had this happen. They are brill - non stop !

MY TIP don't use the nut as that's half the problem, and don't put any pumping pressure on the valve stem.....

Ahh, see what you mean.
BTW Fossy I had a rolled up Vittorio lightweight perish right along the rolled edge a few months ago. I s'pose it had been in my bag for about 6 months. I check em regularly now . Like you say, apart from that one incident they've been excellent

Thanks. I bought a Schwalbe tube at the weekend.

I always use Schwalbe and have never had any problems. The bloke on the desk next to me clocks up lots of miles and he reckons Schwalbe are good too.

Thanks, Chris. Looks like I made a good choice, then.

I used to have hellish problems with tubes splitting at the valve base, I think I must have gone through about 10 tubes of various brands in a couple of months!

From this experience I believe the problem was mainly down to the rims. The profile of the double-walled rims was such that tightening the lock nut or even just the tyre pressure pulled/pushed the valve into the hole in the inner rim which obviously wasn't taped and to be honest looked a bit rough around the edges, combined with jiggling from the pump I used (also a master blaster pocket rocket  ) it was a recipe for disaster. I've had to get new wheels since then and the problems ceased, however my next plan was to try and smooth the edge of the inner hole somehow.

Maz: I've got a spesh sirrus, if I remember correctly that's what you have? perhaps you still have original wheels? Alex Rims of some sort.

Yes. Sirrus with Alex rims (R500s? can't remember).
