About to take delivery of my first road bike, and am furiously googling for some decent kit.

I have an initial budget of around £100 to get some gear. I'm looking at the trad lycra gear, but also like the thought of have some alternative MTB-style kit. Some urban gear I've seen looks good, but typically overpriced. I need to get a helmet and shoes as well, so looking for decent budget options.

Recommend me some budget essentials!

Hurrah - good on you - what did you go for in the end ?

I have some good DHB kit from wiggle - reasonably priced and good quality IMHO.

I also found Altura winter cruisers leggings, and a Bell Solar Sport helmet good VFM.

Don't skimp on gloves. Altura night vision waterproof winter gloves are pretty good.

I nabbed Users upgraded Virtuoso from the classifieds.

Thanks for the tips.

If a sale comes up Aldi are good for bargain cycling clothing. I also like lbs sales every so often you can pick up a good deal if there's a fair deal of competition in your area you can pick up a bargain there, end of seasons sales are usually the best. I occasionally go for a bargain on line but you cant try it on so it has to be a reasonable bargain and make I already have (no the rough sizing of).

sports direct have some low prices and there stuff is not the worst i've had spd shoes for 20 quid by muddyfox along with lots of lycra for under £20 for a ton you could get quite a bit of kit from there

Sports direct can be a bit hit and miss on sizing - I have two pairs of medium Karrimor shorts; one is perfect & surprisingly comfy, the other is way too tight.

Cycle-clothing UK are pretty good.

All good suggestions above, which I would second.

I can also heartily recommend these people, I've bought from them on a number of occasions and they are now one of my first stops.

They sell last year's/end of line/discontinued stock etc, so it's a bit hit & miss with sizes but the prices are very good.

The guy who runs it (Ian) is absolutely first class: a couple of times what I've ordered has been out of stock and he's replaced them with better items (received £90 bib knickers for £23).

He's also tried gear on for me to check the size and has given me some good "trade" advice.

Just one caveat: the website is quite basic, but if you have any questions (or are after something not listed) just give him a call!

Another mention for Sports Direct - the Karrimor lycra shorts seem to be better quality than the Muddy fox, though the jerseys are pretty good.
Our nearest store had the shorts discounted to £5 a pair as well - picked up 5 pairs for the week!
