Cheers to everyone for the advice.

I may look at downloading Kaspersky, but if I go for Avast am I likely to be safe heading straight to there from Google without any antivirus software in the first place?

I've been interested in this thread too. I have norton on my machine (single license) but need something for son's and actually I don't like norton. Looked at reviews on avast and it recommends downloading from freegrisoft.com

You can buy Kaspersky on DVD pretty cheaply on line with a three computer licence. I like having a disk, that way you don't loose it if your computer crashes!

I was told BitDefender was good so tried it for a month on a free trial and it seemed to work fine, but now I have paid for a licence it has started playing up...

I've had Avira AntiVir on all our machines since I binned AVG about 2 years ago and I think it's great. In fact only last week it alerted me to a few problem files on two SD cards.

Avast sounds good based on info here - I use AVG free on the lappy, and Zone Alarm Internet Security Suite on the desktop (paid for - but got the next 12 months free after trialling a beta version when they cocked up an updated release and caused my PC to take 10 minutes to shut down)....

I've just put AVG on sons laptop (vista) loaded ok any problems will materialise later I guess. I have norton for another couple of months then think I'll try Kaspersky 3 licenses quite cheap on amazon at the moment. The good thing about these threads is they do remind me to back up my data.

I had, I think version 7, of Norton for Macs, that updated happily for 5(?) years, because they'd slightly cocked up the Live Update application (If Norton Antivirus wasn't running, it didn't know the subscription had expired.)

Currently using Intego Virus Barrier (Mac)

NOD32 for me - catches more viruses than Norton or Mcafee and is cheaper. Also doesn't slow your system down.

+1 it's pretty good.

The Internet Security has more things than the Anti Virus. On top of the stuff included in the Anti Virus you get a fire wall, anti-spam, virtual keyboard to protect from keyloggers, anti-phishing, and about half a dozen other features. Worth the extra in my opinion.

However, I'm having issues with my computer right now which may or may not be a conflict between Kaspersky and Vista. Unfortunately I can't be more specific than that, it might be nothing, but I can't give it a unreserved thumbs up until I've used it a bit longer. Does get good revues though.

Thanks Mr P, internet security it is then.

Have you bought this yet? If you have, and you're using Vista, I would hold off installing it. I've formatted my computer for the second time and yet again I'm having all sorts of problems after installing Kaspersky. I would not recommend it until I find out what's going on.

Ah, I've got it but not installed it. Unfortunately I've taken the cellophane cover off though, so I can't return it.

Does the free support line not know how to help you?

I think you'll be ok. I've done a lot of digging and I can't find any evidence of other people having the same issues as I'm having. But the clincher is taking Kaspersky off the computer and still having the same problems!

So I don't know what's wrong with it, hard drive on the way out maybe, but I don't think it's Kaspersky. Body of opinion seems to suggest it's pretty good, one of the best.
