My oldish Giant Hybrid needs a really good thorough service and I'm looking for a good LBS. I inherited it and have only recently started doing any real biking. I'll probably replace it with an Uncle John from Planet X come Xmas, but would like to get the Giant in good order anyway.

I suspect it's never been properly serviced, but in particular the right shifter now struggles to change up. I stripped it as far as I dare and suspect the plastic has worn, or the spring isn't doing it's job. Whole thing just might need replacing.

Langsett Cycles offers a gold service for £90. Parts on top. Is it good value?

If it needs a new shifter I wouldn't be surprised if it hits £150. Damn I'm tempted to just get the PXUJ now, but I hate to see the Giant go to waste.

Yeah you're right of course. I don't know what it's worth but it's probably less than the service.

i would give the giant a clean up and a bit of grease and oil which will keep the old girl ticking over until you decide to get the a new bike. the giant will probably fetch reasonable money on ebay just by the strength of the brand name. unless it is unsafe/unroadworthy i would save your money for the new beast.

It's in good Nick aside from the right shifters which need the lever to be held at just the right angle to shifts gear up. Think the plastic ratchet is a bit worn. Shimano, no model visible. Bet that would be difficult to replace.
