I've got the ubiquitous Helly Hansen Lifa top, which is an ideal 2 or 3 season base layer but too light for the current weather. Used to have a merino base until Mrs Gti washed it hot and it shrank. So I really need a mid-weight base layer for very cold weather walking, cycling and skiing, with a zip front and a high, snug neck. Around £50.

Any recommendations?

Slightly over your budget but very good:

I got a thermal base layer from DW Sports , nice and thick circa £20. If it's really cold throw over an additional thin base layer.

Keep the HH and double up on the mid layer. I have a couple of extra warm base layers and it's surprising how often in winter I find them too much and then it's too late to do anything about it.

The smelly Helly is fine in Autumn and Spring but I want to find something with a high neck. I have an old polypropylene top with a tall roll neck and a zip; it looks like a 60s ski top, but it's in a mess and getting very scratchy. It's also got half a sleeve melted away where somebody in a hotel tried to iron it!

I've been wearing a Howies merino base layer under a Ground Effect Baked Alaska shirt most of the winter. On the -10 days I've put an Aldi merino shirt over the top. I'd watch out for the Aldi stuff next autumn. I think it was £15, their sizes are on the large size and they comfortably fit over base layer and shirt. I wore it in the last -2-0 heatwave and was sweaty when I got home.
