Hi
I have used dirt monkey mountain bike rucksack which goes over one shoulder for 3 years not commuting back and forward to work. I now need a change and something that is light comfortable, large but not too bulky and something that 12 inch laptop and a shirt easily

Thanks

I use a Deuter Speedlite 20 litre. Could possibly be described as overkill but it's comfortable, has lots of pockets for stuff, stomach and chest straps for stability and you can adjust it's "bigness" to streamline it when travelling light. It'll take my MacBook, so a 12" laptop will be no problem. Only downside, straps have a lot of spare length.

I recommend deuter too! I have one of their daysacks - it's also ideal for day hikes/ short weekend trips (if you pack VERY lightly!)

Why are they so expensive, are the cheaper type that bad?

No idea, I just ended up with the Deuter because I couldn't find anything cheaper that had the right combintation of size/storage that I wanted.
