Looking at my runabout bike again, It's a viking trecking bike. after years of abuse , I bought it cheap and never fully respected it parked in the rain rode without checking chain wear. (I know I hang my head in shame). I need new wheels it came with mach 1 and the wheels are worn to the indicators. I looked at the rest of the bike and noticed the drive system is pretty worn. I fancy discs as I dont want to replace decent wheels by wearing them down. Anyway to cut a long story short I was thinking of a new runabout but have just noticed it's a 6061 t6 frame which although not the lightest is definitely sturdy and rather comfy for me. so what do you think rebuild with better components or new bike for aprox £450. which would be more cost effective new components to that price or would a new bike have better components in that price range.

It is never cost affective to renovate properly.
To give you an idea, the difference between a £350 bike and a £450 will cost you at least £200 to upgrade the cheaper one

£450 spent wisely gets you a decent, modern, up to date bike.

I know its fun to rebuild a bike, but unless you have the bits, time, knowlage of how to do it, just get another bike.

I know how much bikes/bits are worth and how much it costs to rebuild bikes as i buy bikes whole and either fix them or strip them and sell the *Qualitey bits* Hence My name :hello: :hello:

I have to agree. If it's goosed it's goosed. Replace it. The only exception to this is if you can sniff round your mates and cadge things for the bits box. I keep my runabout running like this, but if I had to buy new parts it would have died some time ago. You can get a decent, little used bike for the price of a set of wheels and a cassette.
