The rim on my rear wheel split yesterday. I've got a bike I use for spares, but I'm concerned that transferring the gears will be difficult, but I'm not keen to spend a fortune on repairs - any suggestions?

I think we need more details.

What are the two bikes, what sort of gears do they have, how many gears does each of them have, are they the same size of wheel, etc

If the spare wheel is compatable with the split one changing cassettes is a five minute job but you do need the right tools. Thats a chain whip, lock ring removel tool and a large adustable spanner. The first two will be £15 - 30 depending on quality but then you have them for life.

I've fixed a wheel like this before by taping a new rim on top of the broken one, then transfering the spokes across to the new rim.

Not as difficult as it sounds. If you can true a wheel, you should be able to do it.

True, do-able in half an hour or so!
If you aren't too hot on the actual wheel building, just lace it up and take it to the LBS to do the tensioning bit.
