Rear mech cage - no tension

Hi all

Got a problem with my Ultegra 6700 rear mech, the second pivot (axle bolt?) that the cage part is joined on with has no tension or spring force so the chain is hanging slightly slack. The pivot where the mech joins the frame is fine and nice and springy.

There was no free pivoting movement between the cage and the main body of the mech, I could move it a few mm by hand with a bit of force. I applied lots of WD40 to free anything stuck but eventually stripped it down and cleaned lots of muck out of the socket that the axle bolt goes into.

I've reassembled it but still have no tension between the cage and the mech that will hold the chain taut - what have I missed ? I might be doing something stupid but I couldn't see how the large spring that goes in the lower socket of the rear mech was supposed to keep the cage part tensioned ?

The bolt that goes thru the cage plate mounting is very stiff and doesn't allow the 2 parts to rotate freely - is this normal ?

I've tried YouTube but can't find anything that talks about the actual method of installation between the cage and the mech part.

Thanks John

That cycling news article looks useful - I'll have another go at it tonight.

Couldn't see anything relating to the lower pivot bolt on the Shimano instructions and with hindsight I agree with the posters on the bikeradar topic about not removing the cage from the mech body !
