I have just purchased a cheap fitting to attach my rear light to the rack, unfortunately the light doesn't fit the bracket. I am not anticipating doing that much cycling in the dark but would like to have a light there in case of need. Rather than order another bracket that doesn't fit the light I figure it may be sensible to get another light and keep the existing one as a spare for the children's bikes. So I would welcome any recommendations for a realtively cheap light that can be attached to the rear rack and is easy to fit and easy on the batteries.

Thanks

It's most likely a cat eye compatible fixing, what rack is it?

Not looking for anything specific though interested to read that some of the lights don't meet with legal requirements in the uk. I just thought you had to have a light no other specifics required. Sorry to be very thick but what is the 'seat stay'. I do need one that fits to the end of the rack as sometimes I use a rack bag rather than panniers so anything on the seat post isn't going to be visible.

Anyone have a bastazoom pannier light?

The 'seat stay' is the smaller diameter tube that goes down from below the seat (where the seat post meets the top tube) at an angle to the rear axle. Because its a smaller diameter I was able to use a bracket designed for the seat stay, fitting it to my rack.

+ 2 for the Smart! I just use the clip on mine that attaches to my rucksack or jersey pocket.

WIllow - if it was the pannier rack mount that I linked to that you bought... then its for a Smart Superflash... and as with the others I would recommend it as the best light for that sort of money. Should be under £15. It also comes with a seat stay mount in the box - which I have used on my kids bikes too. Problem with the seat stay can be if you are using it with panniers... I must get around mine to shifting it to the non-pannier side.

Thanks all.

Summer days it was the fitting is just slightly to big for my existing light. I'll order the recommended today seems like it's very versatile which would good.

What I should have done of course was think about having panniers before I had the other light put on but at the time I was thinking of using a ruck sack.

I use one of these -

I think it's got a BS number on it, so is probably legal. However, it's only got 1 LED in it and I'm not convinced that its as bright as the light others have suggested. But then I use a pannier and that has another bright flashing LED light clipped to it.

I did it this way round as the law used to say no flashing light on bikes - but on luggage/clothes was acceptable. I wanted legal lights so if I was involved in a collision, the blame couldn't be attributed to me due to illegal (and assumed poor) lighting.

Hi guys the smart has arrived and is just the job. Fits on the afore-emntioned rack bracket and the accompanying fixings put on the old light fit the seat stay of my son's bike so success all round.

thanks for all your help.

Glad you like it ... it seems quite a robust light ... and if water does get in (only in really torrential rain) it does dry out fine.
