Cake or ice cream? The choice is endless ...

A few days ago, on my way back from a ride, the rear Shimano hub on my Canondale SL4 lost drive. After a 4 mile walk home and a fettle yesterday, I got the drive back but now have a noise from the wheel/hub like something's loose.
I assumed it was the pawls that had broken, but after stripping and re-assembling the hub, it worked fine apart from the noise. All parts that came off went back on again in the correct order and the were not over tightened.
There is no sideways play on the wheel once its fitted on the bike, but there's some wobble in the cassette that seems to be taken up once the chain is back on.

I'm going to strip it down again at the weekend and try again.
Any ideas folks?

Most likely the pawls sticking open. Depending on the hub, it's often flush it with light oil if you can. You don't want lots of grease in there.

I would have said frozen if it was cold, but it's been fairly warm. I've had a frozen freehub before. If it's going to be sub-zero over a number of days and I've washed the bike, I'll make sure I keep it indoors overnight so that it dries out.

That's a Formula hub - cheap OEM stuff put on to keep the price down.

They can be a be hit or miss I gather and spares are not going to be available.

The initial problem was with the pawls. These ride on springs which fold down when you freewheel and rise up and engage when you pedal (yours stayed down due to muck etc).

It sounds like one may have gone and bits of spring are floating in the mechanism.

Even if the hub can be repaired I wouldn't trust it to keep going so would recommend a new Shimano hub (they last a lot longer and can be repaired).
