Rear Deilleuier Pully cage removal

Hello all Just wondered if any of you have encountered problems removing rear pulley cage (Short cage) from a sora RD unit. As on my tiagra unit its a Allen grub screw fixing where as you can see from the pictures of the Sora RD s/s show a covered slot which even trying to prise off has me beaten. As don't want to damage it all I wanted to do was interchange the short cage for a GS version cage So am I being far to gentle with it but have already broken three old Stanley blades, any ideas anybody

It will end in tears. Don't start fiddling with that part - boinnnggg will go the springs.

Sora mechs don't come apart like that, they're not designed to be as serviceable as the higher tier groups.

I've had quite a few rear mechs apart. Most of mine have been older ones, and unless they've changed a lot they are not so difficult to get back together.

I've never tried with that particular mech, but my best guess is that a circlip is behind that cover.

Ah Thank you very much for this I perhaps should have done a little I am sure I would have got there in the end But its the cover over the circlip that is proving difficult at the moment still will persevere I perhaps should have done a little more searching on the net.

And on the subject of stripping the Rear Mech down I just did a tiagra Unit with out a problem and it works well so far But see now that swapping a pulley cage over wouldn't be possible between a Tiagra and a Sora pulley because one is circlip fixing and the tiagra is an Allen grub screw type. so as suggested early in the thread will perhaps have to buy a Sora G S Rear Dérailleur

No worries. I decided to go digging to satisfy my own curiosity, as all my mechs are much older and do not have this type of design/assembly.

It looks like it will probably be quite tight, and I expect your mech might have a few scratches when it's done. My tool of choice for a job like that would probably be a set of watch makers screwdrivers, as they are strong, but still have quite sharp tips (and even sharper if you rub them on a whetstone first). A craft knife might work, but be careful of snapping the tip (wear eye protection).
