That was an interesting read.. thanks for the link.
He was talking 50/34 frontcrank with 32 rear cassette and mine is a 50/36 frontcrank so a 11-32 cassette would seen better than what I have but not as harsh as the 50/34, if that makes sense?
But he did say 20% hills are hard work and I agree, so anything that would help would be good for me as well seeing as I live on a mountain.

HI Boon,

I've just put exactly that cassette on my Tiagra 10-speed equipped bike with no problems at all, and should now be able to get up pretty much anything the Mendip Hills can throw at me. The only thing I have to be aware of is not using the 32t rear while on the 50t at the front.

^_^

I'll try to remember that.....
Loads of really steep hills up here in the clouds...

In the end i went 11-30 with 50/34 front and it works easily on every gear. The 32 tooth was right on the limit and although i could say never use big big it may well happen.

IMHO over 30 then go to 34 or 36 cassette and fit a deaore rear mech.

Hi Peteaud..

Just re-checking my numbers and my rear cassette is 12-28 not 11-28 so a 32 rear cassette would be 2 bigger cogs I think which should work out OK on my 36 small front cog.
Did you have to alter the chain in the end..

Cheers

Its the big / big & small / small thats the issue.

I found 50 /32 was right on the limit.

The chain length = big /big + 2 links so if you go from 28 to 32 you will need a longer chain.

Whilst 32 is poss ok it is on the very limit (i had to wind the b screw all the way in) so i went for a 30T to be safe.

If you are thinking about 32 i would really go to 34 and a new rear mech to be safe, merlin do a deore for a good price

The small to small makes the rear mech go to the other extreme and may snag the chain, although as you have a 36 this should be ok

Of course you are never meant to use the extremes so running the 32 would be fine, until the day you accidently hit the shift and wreck the rear mech, or worse jam it solid and throw you off.

If you do go for the 32 take your time to set it up and triple check its not going to jam up.

As long as it is a 9 speed not 10 speed DynaSys model.

If the setup was optimum to begin with, changing from 28T to 32T rear will require a pair (i.e. 1 inch) of extra links.

Well I might take a hint from you and opt for a 30 as well then, and not a 32.
Something to think about as I'm keen for a lower gear, but not to upset the balance of the bike too much.

To be fair i found the 30 ok for the steeper hills, although i have ridden a 34/34 bike and it is easy going but you dont move very fast.

The hill I want to do is one they used on the 2005 Vuelta about 3 miles from my home and it just gets steeper the higher you climb and I feel with one more lower gear I might ... I say might be able to get to the top, but its still only a might.
But I am a trier.. also I've not been riding long and more fitness will always help..

I have a hill like that.

I failed to get to the top many times, but did it eventualy.

I can do it on the 30 tooth but not a 28.
