as a relative newbie, especially in the technical know how, i ride a giant defy 5 2013. i hope to swap the wheels as an upgrade, i was wondering if anyone can advise or help. is the rear cassette (8 sprockets) worth changing up to 10 sprockets to help when climbing and if so can anyone suggest what brand. thanks

It's not as simple as that. You would also need to change the shifters to ten speed, and the chain to the same. I've looked at the spec for your bike and it gives a small chainring with 34 teeth and a large sprocket with 32. Changing to ten speed won't give you any lower gears than that and they are already low enough for even the most challenging climbs. It's just a case of getting fitter, I'm afraid.

I'm shooting from the hip and this suggestion may be rubbish...but.....you could stick with the eight speed drive chain and substitute a front chainring with fewer than 34 teeth, if one is available. The rear derailleur would have to cope with the new tooth combination but the manufacturer's rules are usually pretty conservative in my limited experience.

Or fit another 8 speed cassette with bigger gears. Hell, an MTB.cassette would drop the gearing a treat but you'll need a new chain, and possibly a new mech if you go too extreme.

You can't fit lower than 33th ( I think) on a 110BCD and I have never seen these for sale.

@mikeruss easiest way get an Acera MTB RD or above these should be good to 34th and fit a cassette starting at 34th, the problem is you will get larger jumps between gears.
Next time try going to CRC and get a HG50 much better quality.
