Hi All,

As previously mentioned on another thread you’ve all rightly suggested to replace my 9 speed cassette on my 90s old winter GT MTB - suddenly struck me I’ve no idea what type of fitting this old back wheel will require or what options I have or not ? Re splines or whatever ?

Apologies for muddy wheels been dashing about and getting daggers re balance between bike care and Christmas prep 🤣🤣🤣

Any help for this novice as ever much appreciated don’t want to purchase the wrong type

Seasonal regards HumpTdumpty

Is this the GT Aggressor 3 2009-11? 9 speed??
Hub will be a 'normal' 8-9-10 freehub, almost certainly Shimano (what make/model are the shifters? ? Shimano EF-50 Rapid Fire?) and will take any 9sp Shimano (or compatible, just not Campagnolo) cassette without a spacer.
Have you replaced the chainset yet?
New cassette will require new chain or at least one with less than 1500km on it: if in doubt new (or at least have one ready).
Decide what the lowest gear you want (depends on your available power and the steepness/length of the hills you might ride). With a 22t inner ring frankly I'd get an 11-28t, slide it on, cinch the lockring (40Nm), and ride on.

And please amend the title (delete"rear tyre re").

Nine speed cassette. You can buy a Shimano replacement or an aftermarket brand offered by the likes of Decathlon which are a bit cheaper.
You'll need a tool to remove the cassette lockring and a chain whip ( length of steel with a chain attached to hold the cassette while you undo the lockring). If buying from Decathlon they do a very neat toolkit for about £45 I think which includes all you need for this and a few other bike jobs.
Might be a good idea to replace the chain too. Use the old one to size the replacement link for link (not total length). Chain link removal tool required (included in that tool kit).
Good luck.

The advice offered in my post is all applicable.
To remove and install the cassette you'll need a cassette lock ring tool and a chain whip.

New 9sp chain will need cutting and a 'quick link'.

Don't use the 'old one' to decide the length of the chain, unless the cassette's largest sprocket has the same number of teeth..

Great thanks I’ve got a chain whip and a lock ring tool 👍

I reckon the “old girl” is due some TLC !
How can anyone possessing such tools call themselves "a beginner in all respects"?
What other tools do you have to play with?
Edit to add: "I reckon the “old girl” is due some TLC!" you said in November.
Have you replaced the chainset yet? Or was that thread "GT-aggressor-3-2009-to-2011-drive-train-questions" a waste of time too.

HNY to one and all - well I’ve finally made a start and stripped the GT - had a BB mechanical the other day etc so now just assembling the new parts - have to say although I’m in the “all the gear no idea” squad I’ve really learned a lot from your good selves and trial and error YouTube etc - 24hrs of parts submerged in “Gunk” and I can see light @ the end of the tunnel 👍
