I am planning this Friday to make my first 'long distance' ride. Well, long distance for me, anyway - Reading to London along route 4. Looking at the Sustrans website, there doesn't seem to be a pdf of the route like there is of others. I'd like to see the route before I set off (I'm not from the area). Is anyone able to point me in the direction of an online map of this route?

I found the route a pain.

went from london to Windsor and was frustrated with the indirectness and poor surface quality (about 2005)

personally I would not use this route, I'd pick my own (encompassing some of it though)

Well, that didn't go to plan. I reckon I did most of the distance... just not in the right directions. I had to give up with failing light and failing legs in Taplow, and took the train the rest of the way.

I tried that route once, gave up at Maidenhead due to weather but was getting frustrated. I realise they tried to avoid the A4 but most of my time was spent criss-crossing it and not going towards my destination.

You can do quite a nice route from reading to maidenhead by cutting south through Twyfod and Waltham. From Maidenhead there are nice roads and tracks down to Windsor. After that I have no idea but I'm sure you could find a better route than sustrans did.
