'RAW' Files To 'JPEG'

Daughters boyfriend has let me download from his DSLR a few images from their trip on Tuesday, on the Settle-Carlisle

One issue is that they're big 'files' @ 28MB per photo
To me. that's a ridiculous size

How can I downsize to something reasonable
Paint, or a simple 'edit' doesn't seem to have any effect

Something simple please, for this techno-luddite!!

PS I'm testing it with a 15 MB picture now ...

Not bad! 15 MB -> 1.7 MB and still reasonable quality.

Or, depending on which make of camera, most have their own raw image software usually available to download for free...

Canon's is here and Nikon's here

You should be able to do some simple editing, resizing and save as jpg with them...

Having looked at that, it appears to need the camera connected & can't do it from a saved (to LapTop) file

Looks like you may be right - haven't used them for a while and probably had a camera connected... this one is free and won't need the camera...

I use irfanview for this sort of thing from time to time, not sure it does RAW though..

The Canon software works on saved files or straight from camera. I have used that software on RAW files from Nikons as well.

Slightly off-topic, but Adobe are giving away the original version of Photoshop as a free download.

I use Faststone Image Viewer for this kind of stuff:

A really useful free piece of software, will do batch conversion of RAW to JPG, just look under the 'Tools' menu.
