I've posted this question in another forum but only one person replied but he's not 100% sure. I was wondering if anyone here knows the answer.

I've got a Roubaix road bike. The internal cable is making a rattling noise within the top tube.

According to Specialized (video: http://servicevideos.specialized.com/video/23917838) I need to slide some o-ring or cable donuts onto a short piece of cable sheath and then slide it onto the rear brake cable and into the top tube.

I've removed the internal brake cable and could not find any donuts or sheath. Unless they fell inside the tube frame. Is it possible?

I've already got the cable donuts. My question is: do I really need that piece of cable sheath? Is it absolutely necessary? If yes, where do I get them from? Could I just use the cable donuts without the sheath?

Cheers

cable sheith is maybe .5 to 1 mm wider than the cable this meas that the o ring stretech slightly onto it. On the cable they can slide up and down as they please. Sheith keeps them in the same place and this provides the buffer in places needed.

Bit like putting a laggy band round a roling pin - if the band is the same size or bigger then the rolling pin its lose and can slide. Put a piece of gutter pipe over the rolling pin then the laggy band ver the pipw - it aint moving.

The ideal ghetto cable sheath can be stripped from a length of outer cable. Use a sharp blade to split the outer black plastic from the first few inches, then use pliers to tear away the wire reinforcing strands.

Yes I got the rattle inside my Roubaix top tube. I just used a length of CUNIFER (Copper/Nickel/Iron) brake pipe which has an internal diameter the same as a bicycle brake cable, to push three rubber doughnuts onto the brake cable at roughly 1/3 intervals inside the frame. As far as I know they're still in place because I don't hear the rattle any more.

You'll get CUNIFER brake pipe from brake specialists and independent Citroen garages; it's bendy and perfect for routing cables through frames.

Just seen this so you may have solved already.

I bought a Roubaix last year and upgraded from the 105 to Ultegra 11 speed full set. I noticed when replacing the rear brake cable (needed a slightly longer cable than the one fitted for the new brakes), that the one coming out had a kink in it about 3 inches in from the front hole on the top tube. I thought no more of it until 2nd ride on the new set up and I started to notice the rattle.

Looked at various options but in the end I pulled the cable and put a small kink in the inner at the same point as the cable I had taken out, re fitted etc. and hey presto, no rattle. Year on and all still seems well.

Hope this helps
